You Me and Dupree

’You, me and Dupree’ is the newly released DVD starring Owen Wilson, Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo big things were expected of this film and sadly I just don’t think it quite delivered.

Let’s start with the plot line. Newlyweds Molly (Kate Hudson) and Carl (Matt Dillon) agree to let Carl’s long term friend and best man Randy Dupree stay with them so that he can get himself back on his feet and find a new job. As you can imagine, things definitely don’t run smoothly as Dupree proves to be the house guest from hell, setting fire to things, lazing around and generally being a royal pain in the behind.

However, when Dupree begins to bond with Molly, Carl’s paranoia gets the better of him and he fears maybe his best friend could be trying to take his place in the household.

The film starts well, and there’s no getting away from the fact that Owen Wilson is just as hilarious in this movie as he has been in Zoolander, Wedding Crashers and many of his other blockbusters. The problem here is not with the acting, in my opinion it’s the storyline and lack of continued humour from the other characters that lets the movie down. There is also a slightly darker undertone to You me and Dupree that I didn’t expect, it’s more than just a comedy it also deals with Carl’s slow descent into paranoia and the anger he harbours towards his father in law (Michael Douglas) building to an ending that eventually stops being the laugh out loud comedy that you thought it would be, and turns into something altogether more serious.
Don’t get me wrong, the film is not all doom and gloom; there are some genuinely funny scenes and the actors seem to work well together. Fans of Owen Wilson won’t be too disappointed as he is the obvious star of the show and manages to make it worth watching, but speaking as a Kate Hudson fan myself I do think this was a rather weak role for her.

All in all, if you have money to burn and time to spare then this movie is definitely watchable, just don’t expect it to be the laugh out loud non stop comedy that the trailers would have you believe.
