Oxford Gets GTA cash windfall

May 5, 2008

Oxford university England, will reap some of the rewards from the gaming juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto 4, which has projected earnings of over £200m, that’s because the games advanced Euphoria gaming engine was designed and developed at Oxfords zoology department by two of its students.

The two students in question (Torsten Reil and Colm Massey) then took their project and started a company called “Natural Motion” to market and sell the engine, with GTA being one of the first to use the project, closely followed by Star Wars: the force unleashed.

Its not yet known how much Oxford will get from the Euphoria engine, but it will get profits from GTA 4, and all future games that employ and utilise the engine, but since this is a state of the art character modeling engine which eliminates the need for pre-made animations, it probably wasnt too cheap.

Fair play to the students at Oxford for revolutionising game design as we know it. The next time someone says that gaming is not an educational tool, here is your argument !!
