Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Review
June 5, 2008
Lego Star Wars is one of the biggest gaming surprises of recent years - who would have thought that one of the biggest Sci Fi adventures ever would gel so well with little building blocks from Denmark, now the same team behind this amazing game are applying the Lego treatment to the Indiana Jones trilogy, in Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.
As the title implies it features action from the first three movies, which leaves them plenty of scope to make a follow up game or downloadable content featuring the latest movie but is the game any good?
Graphics
Indiana Jones looks brilliant; the developers have really captured the essence of the characters from Indy’s stubbly chin to the tiny Short Stop, and the environment is much more detailed than the Star Wars games, which is mainly down to the style of film i.e. jungles etc, bugs, snakes, traps and spikes have all been lovingly created to a very high standard.
Gameplay
One of the strong points of the Lego games has been the fun factor – the ability to pick up, play and have fun, and this hasn’t been lost on the Indy game, unfortunately one of the factors which makes the Star Wars game so great is the diversity of characters, chewie, luke, princess leia, hans they are all characters you want to play with, but the way in which the Indiana Jones movies are made, with only a core of good characters, and a large amount of faceless bad guys has made it difficult for the developers, meaning most of us will only want to play with Indy, and a few other of our favourites, luckily the lack of characters has meant that LucasArts and Traveller’s Tales have been more innovative in other ways such as the phobia system – as you will remember our hero Indy is scared of snakes, and this factors into the game, if Indy comes into contact with one or more snakes, he covers his eyes and runs around in circles until the danger has past, other characters too have the same issues, but also have special abilities – some of the female characters can jump higher than the others, Dr Jones Snr can solve problems faster, Satipo has a spade for digging things up and Willie Scott has a button to press which releases her famous screaming power, which can actually break glass. Depth wise the game is amazing, completing the game will probably only take you a couple of days, but it will take weeks, maybe months to unlock everything in the game and find all the Easter eggs using the various unlocked characters from within the game.
Overall
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is a fantastic game and a must for fans of the film, the only minus point I can throw at the game is that true fans may feel a little robbed as certain scenes have been left out of the game such as the heart plucking, face melting and strangely the Nazi’s are missing from The Last Crusade, weird as decapitation, people being crushed and impaled on spears all remain.
