The Guild

After reading the interview with Dr Horrible and Buffy Star; Felicia Day over at our sister site Girlie Gossip, I thought I had better watch Felicia’s creation “The Guild”, I’m not too sure what I was doing when the show first aired in July 2007 but I missed a treat, a mistake I won’t make again. Felicia is currently writing/filming season two, which is rumoured to feature longer more in depth episodes and also be filmed in HD for all you purists out there.

The Guild revolves around the lives of a group of MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) gamers, who all have their specific neurosis, Felicia Day stars as Codex a red headed vixen who you wouldn’t imagine would play online games but since Felicia herself is/was an online gamer and is rather attractive that kinda dispels the myth. Sandeep Parikh plays Zaboo a gnome warlock who has more than a healthy obsession with Codex, Amy Okuda plays “Tink” a gamer girl with a fierce temper and a passion for her DS, Jeff Lewis plays Vork the guild’s leader, a man who is coming to terms with the death of his grandfather whom he used to care for, although he continues to cash his social security cheques, Robin Thorsen plays stay at home mom Clara, who has more than a few dubious secrets, she has three kids and is always leaving them to fend for themselves whilst she games online, and finally Vincent Caso stars as Bladezz, a young gamer who is more intent on causing havoc in the game by posting up lewd images and annoying fellow members with his rants.

The story begins usually with Codex in front of her webcam revealing the exploits of the day, and in the first episode we see her get some unwanted attention from another member of her guild “Zaboo”, who tracks her down online and turns up at her house, I won’t spoil the show for you by revealing the plots of every episode, but you really have to go watch them, most episodes are sub six minutes long, so it won’t take you very long to watch the whole first season, and get yourself well and truly hooked!.

When I first heard about the show I was more than a little sceptical as to whether it would be for me, as the closest I have ever gotten to an MMO is when I downloaded a World Of Warcraft trial, spent twenty minutes trying to kill things and then got bored and put my Xbox back on, but happily anyone who has ever been online in a chatroom, or on Msn and has some idea of the standard branch of keyboard shortcuts such as LOL (laugh out loud) AFK (away from keyboard) and others, or has every been approached by an online friend with an invite to meet IRL (in real life) will be able to empathise with the show and its characters, its well written and very funny, and I highly recommend trying it out - remember Dr Seuss and the Green Eggs and Ham tale folks!.

Best Bit: Episode 3 after the credits have rolled, we see Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh) return to Codex’ room and rub his magic carpet, which really has the cast and crew rolling around on the ground in hysterics.
