Review: Kinect Sports Season 2

The Kinect has been out for some time now, and I will be 100% honest and say that it doesn’t get the greatest amount of use in my house, I primarily play first person shooters such as Black Ops and Battlefield, the missus plays survival horror stuff like Resident Evil 5 and Left for Dead and my daughter loves the Viva Pinata series and the Lego games, but occasionally a game will come along that will capture all of our interest, and that game is Kinect Sports: Season 2.

A few moments after popping the disc in the xbox my daughter and I were literally in stitches as we tried in vain to play a competitive game of darts, soon after my wife came in and we ended up playing for around 4 hours straight at all the various sports, it really is that fun:

Darts: You get a real feel for a classic televised game of darts complete with northern announcer, sometimes the aiming can be a little screwy but overall it is very fun

Baseball: each player takes it in turns at being the pitcher and the batter, it was quite fun but the game seemed to take a long time to finish and my daughter who is eight was getting fairly restless ending with me letting her win (Honest)

Golf: A standard game of golf, fun and very accurate.

American Football: we played Co-op I was the quarterback, and had to bend down and shout “Hike” to get the ball, then throw to my daughter, we had great fun playing this and the inclusion of punting etc made the game feel more realistic.

Skiing: Easily one of our favourites, compete splitscreen with your friend, bend down to go faster and try to get through all the slalom gates, loads of different courses available.

Tennis: The tennis was pretty fun and very easy to play

Overall we loved Kinect Sports Season 2, the new range of sports coupled with the ability to send your best times/scores etc to a friend over xbox live to challenge them is a great addition and the new voice commands are excellent, the time required to put your hand over a game/setting and wait for the magic circle to spin round is too much in my opinion, with around 4 verbal commands I could navigate my way into any of the games and even change various settings, the voice integration makes the game pleasant to navigate enabling you to take a breather whilst waiting for the next game to start, which can be quite useful at times.

Kinect Sports Season 2 is released October 25th 2011
