Rent

From the moment I first watched the trailers for Rent I knew that I was going to love this film. I am a huge fan of musicals and unlike some people I love to see them taken from the stage and made into movies. This gives more people who wouldn’t be able to get to a theatre chance to see it and appreciate the music and stories for themselves. Obviously as with any film version of a theatre show most people are going to prefer the original version that they have seen at the theatre, that is to be expected, but in the case of Rent I think everyone involved has done a fantastic job and created a movie to be proud of.
For those who don’t already know, Rent tells the story of a group of friends living with the fact that they are dying from Aids.
It shows how they bond, form life long friendships and come to rely on each other to get them through both the good times and the bad.
Most of the original stage show cast actually star in this film, which is possibly what makes it so truly stunning to watch. The music, the characters and the chemistry between them all is not only great, but it is truly believable. The songs are performed with all the passion of the stage, and despite people criticizing Rosario Dawson for her singing voice I loved it, she sang Mimi’s words with the exact emotion that they deserved to have and I loved the soft tones of her voice. Adam Pascal as Roger was a complete joy to listen to; he has a rock star tone to his voice that completely blew me away every time he sang. I was also particularly impressed by Jesse L Martin as Tom, for some reason that performance just stuck out for me and the emotion between him and Wilson Jermaine Heredia through their relationship was more believable than any of the others.
In short Rent is a beautiful movie with some profound messages throughout. Watch it and I guarantee you will be moved.
