Katia Winter Interview
September 6, 2007

Hi Katia, thanks so much for taking time out to chat with us here at DamnThatsAwesome. Let’s start by asking you to tell us a little about who you are and what you do in your own words…I was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. I have spent several years traveling throughout Europe and America. The last 2 years I have been living in London. I love to explore new places and I need a change of atmosphere quite often. To see and experience different countries and cultures is a great satisfaction to me. I’ve always done creative things, like painting, designing, film and editing. It was actually when I was studying film/editing that I had the guts to get in to acting. I was incredibly shy as a child and afraid of showing myself vulnerable. All of that shyness disappeared when I started traveling, it kind of had to. So I got into theatre and film.
You play the role of Ruby Stone in ‘Night Junkies’ are we right in thinking that this was your first film in the UK? If so, how did you find you adapted to filming and working on set?
Yes, it was my first film in the UK and I was terrified. First of all I never thought I get the part, so when I did I panicked. What do I do? It was a very demanding role. I couldn’t have started off with something nice and sweet? Like a romantic comedy or a period piece? No, it had to be violent, sexy and raw. In other words it was very exposing. I have to say, I loved it. I love to be challenged. That is what every actor wants, isn’t it? I tried to adapt and get directed as much as I could. I had only been in the UK for 4 months. If I did it today, I would probably have played it very different. But then again, the fear I had then and there on screen would probably not be as strong. Plus I would sound much more English, which takes the character in a different direction. I believe everything happens for a reason and filming Night Junkies was a very good start in my career.
You played the role of Ruby brilliantly; we thoroughly enjoyed your performance and thought you came across as very natural and confident. Did you do much research for your role?
Thank you. I don’t know how confident I was but I’m very glad to hear you say so. I read a lot about human sex trafficking, prostitution and addiction. How it is and feels to be an addict. We all know how it is to be addicted to something but when the addiction is so strong it takes over your life and you need that fix otherwise you won’t survive is something different. What happens to your body when you go cold turkey and so on. I also had the chance to spend time with a former stripper who also taught me how to pole dance. That gave me lots of insights and senses of those surroundings.
What are your own personal favourite scenes from Night Junkies and why?
I like the scene with Maxi (Jonathan Coyle) and Vincent (Giles Alderson) when Maxi has that long speech about farts. It made me laugh, he played it really well. The scene I enjoyed filming the most was the big scene with Psycho (Rene Zagger) at the very end. It was my first time doing a coordinated fight scene. We had a brilliant stunt coordinator on set (Daniel Kobbina) to help us out. It was just so much intensity and anger in that scene and also by adding a fight and struggle it made the adrenaline flow so much more.
A little bird also told us that romance blossomed between you and Giles Alderson (Vincent) off screen as well as on, this must have been an added bonus of being involved with the movie!
Yes, we had a lot of chemistry. And still have.
After checking out your ‘myspace’ page, we also noticed that you are an artist; your work is absolutely beautiful! Is this something you do as a hobby or are they available for sale?
Thank you so much. I’m really glad you liked my art work. I’ve been doing it as a hobby since I was very young. It is only the last year I have been creating art to sell. It is such a wonderful thing to be able to loose yourself for hours and play with shapes, forms and colours. It is something I love doing and will probably do for the rest of my life.
What projects do you have planned for the future? Are you involved in filming anything right now you can tell us about?
I have just completed a TV series for Channel 4. It’s called Dubplate Drama and will be out in September this year. It was my first time working within TV and I found it very different from film. I’m doing another feature film in July, shooting in north Italy. I am really looking forward to that.
Seeing as we are an entertainment site, we couldn’t let you go without asking you a little about your own personal tastes! What are your favourite:
Movies – Leon
Actors – Meryl Streep & Edward Norton.
TV Shows – Scrubs
Bands – Tough one…I listen to a large variety of music. Everything, really.
Many thanks to Katia Winter for taking time out to chat to us here at DamnThatsAwesome.com, we look forward to seeing more of you in the near future.
Thank you!
