After hearing some less than favorable reviews of ‘The Break-up’ starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, I decided that seeing as it has just been released on DVD here in the UK I should watch it myself. Most of the criticism towards this movie from other reviewers and writers seems to have been that the film just wasn’t funny enough. True, it’s not a barrel of laughs the whole way through, and anyone going into the movie with this impression would have been extremely disappointed, there are some genuinely funny scenes in the first 30 minutes of the film but we soon come to realise that this is not going to be your standard romantic comedy.

The Break-up has a darker and more real edge to it that most other movies of its genre, the things that the lead characters Brooke and Gary fight over are exactly the sort of pointless fights that almost everyone I know has been involved with at one point or another and the kind that we all know really do cause people to break up. Both characters have their flaws, neither one wants to back down and admit they are wrong and this leads to a string of fights, childish pranks and embarrassing situations that soon turn nasty.
Both Vince and Jennifer are fantastic in this movie, and their on screen chemistry is genuinely touching. The supporting cast is equally as good, but it’s a shame we don’t get to see more of Jason Bateman who is a very talented actor and could have done with a larger role in the film.

I have to say that like most other people who watched this movie, I was expecting a standard romantic comedy with your usual ‘belly laughs’ and silly gags, however what I actually got was something that in my opinion was even better. The Break-up touches upon the realism that lies in the heart of every relationship and the day to day issues that both men and women face when living with their partners. Relationships aren’t perfect and sometimes they do need work, and this is what this movie makes completely clear. The characters don’t get an easy ride, and things don’t always end exactly the way you want them to, but yet it still manages to show a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. With a great blend of humour, realism and some talented actors, I found The Break-up to be a fantastic surprise of a movie that is definitely worth watching.
