What a brilliant movie! Monster House may only have a PG rating but don’t let this fool you, it is creepy, dark, and brilliantly animated combining everything you would expect from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, breathing life into what could have so easily been your average run of the mill kids film.
If you’re a film lover or a Spielberg fan this movie will have you hooked right from the opening scene which features a small child riding her bike along a quiet suburban street softly humming the theme tune to Steven Spielberg’s
‘Amazing Stories’ none the lass. She soon stops at an old creepy looking house and when her bike becomes stuck on the lawn, the hostile owner ‘Mr Nebbercracker’ makes his first appearance. He is a genuinely scary, yet brilliant character that kids will love and the fact that his voice is provided by actor Steve Buscemi makes it even more appealing to adults too.
The story gets even more fast paced when local kids DJ (Voiced by Mitchel Musso) and Chowder (Sam Lerner) soon become obsessed with the strange house and its apparent ability to come to life and devour those who enter! They begin to spy on the place from DJ’s room across the street; however, the events they witness lead them to embark on a daring mission to enter inside and rescue those who have become trapped by this wicked house with a huge appetite.
The thing I personally loved about Monster House is that you almost forget that you are watching an animated movie aimed at children and quickly find yourself drawn into its genuinely interesting plotline. The special effects are also of extremely high quality adding to the charm and appeal of the movie as a whole.
Younger children may find Monster House a little too scary, so I would recommend that a parent watches with them at first. Other than that it is a great film for both kids and adults and is definitely on Enchanted Entertainment’s ‘One to Watch’ list.
Out now on DVD!
