Hostel Review

Hostel Directed by Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino is becoming one of 2005’s most talked about film releases, and with very good reason. The film, starring Jay Hernandez Derek Richardson and Eythor Gudjonsson is a truly shocking yet brilliant modern day horror film.
The general plotline of the film is that as viewers we follow a group of young guys as they backpack around Slovakia looking for a Hostel which has been described to them as ‘the best place to meet hundreds of beautiful girls who can’t get enough of American men’. After a long journey they eventually manage to find the place, but they are blissfully unaware of just how much trouble they are getting themselves into.
Strange disappearances, disturbing imagery and tense cinematography all build this movie up to a high standard of film making that certainly leaves nothing to the imagination.
It is at about the half way point that this movie completely changes pace and direction from feeling like your average ‘Roadtrip/Eurotrip’ type film to a full on, no holds barred gore fest!
One of the things that shocked me about Hostel personally was it’s ability to actually genuinely scare you, and I don’t mean the usual ‘edge of your seat’ jumpy kind of scares either, I’m talking about genuine horror at it’s best and most disgusting! You constantly identify with the sense of panic and fear from the main character and I love the way the movie kind of forces you to get into the mindset of ‘what would I do in that situation?’
Having watched Hostel last night, I found that whilst it was different to what I was expecting (In the sense that it didn’t just dive into full on horror, it made you wait for the serious stuff!) it is one of those films that you just have to be able to say that you have watched! Be warned though, If you are squeamish I would avoid this film at all costs as there are some truly disgusting scenes towards the end that you may need a strong stomach for.
Over all, Hostel is a well thought out film, with the ability to shock and scare its viewers. It could have benefited from cutting down the slightly drawn out start just a bit, but other than that, a great film and highly recommended to all horror fans out there!
