The Andromeda Strain 2008 Review
May 5, 2008
I was very excited when the preview discs of the new Andromeda Strain mini movie landed on my doormat, being a big fan of the original book by Michael Crichton I was looking forward to sitting down and getting engrossed in a new adaptation of one of my favourite stories.
Whilst a lot of things have changed from the original story, the primary story remains the same - A US satellite crashes down in a small town in Utah, unleashing a deadly virus on its inhabitants, killing everyone in the town with the exception of two people - an old man, and a baby. Why and how did they survive?, can the specialist team of scientists find out the answer and protect the population before the virus spreads? all those answers will be revealed. That said, some of the things which made the original so tense and brilliant have been taken out, and some things that have been added are less than brilliant such as the quite tiresome presidential scenes.
The Andromeda Strain is going to be shown on Sky movies on May 11th & 12th 2008, with a double disc DVD release following on May 19th by Universal pictures, if you have never read the book nor seen the original 1971 movie, check it out as the new cast “Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order, Love in a time of Cholera), Rick Schroder (24, NYPD Blue), Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and Andre Braugher (City of Angels)” really makes this stand out from the rest. If however you are a big fan of the originals maybe you should sit this one out, unless your in the mood for a rant.
Overall:
If you have never seen the original, nor read the books, watch it, you will enjoy it, if you’re a fan of the originals, have a look if your interested, but dont expect too much from it
