Unbeaten by Kim Woodburn

For Kim Woodburn, finding fame in her 60s in the smash hit HOW CLEAN IS YOUR HOUSE? is like a fairytale come true. Hugely popular as the ‘blonde dominatrix’ of the duo, Kim daydreamed of Hollywood stardom as a child – escapism from the reality of home where she suffered constant physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her mother and stepfather. With little love and constant insecurity she grew up fearful of company, friendless and alone.
Shuttled between the homes of her warring parents, a succession of children’s homes and the cruel regime of the local Nazareth House convent, Kim’s past cast a long shadow over her life for many years. Neglected by her father, beaten by her alcoholic mother, hers was a childhood of random and unrelenting cruelty.
At just 15, after a vicious beating from her stepfather, Kim made her escape and, alone, made her first foray into adult life and independence the only way she knew how – through sheer hard work. But just when she thought she’d left the brutality and hardship behind, heartbreak was still to follow with a brutal first marriage and the traumatic loss of her son. Only on finally meeting her loving husband, Peter, did happiness finally find Kim and after decades of cleaning and looking after others, she took a call, found her chance and became Britain’s Queen of Clean.
A hope-filled story of triumph over adversity, Kim’s indomitable spirit makes this story one that will inspire everyone.
What We Thought:
After reading the first page of this book I knew I was going to be hooked, but I must say that I was not prepared to be quite as shocked, touched and genuinely moved as I was whilst reading ‘Unbeatable’ and it is without doubt one of the best biographies on the shelves at the moment. We get a lot of books sent to us to review here at Enchanted Entertainment and it is very rare that one stands out and makes such a lasting impression as Kim Woodburn’s book has for me. The honesty in which she writes and the brutal and horrifying childhood she has had to endure reduced me to tears at some points as you try to imagine what could ever make a mother treat her own child the way Kim’s mother treated her. This accompanied by the violent relationships and the tragic loss of her baby son all seemed so much for one woman to go through in her life. However, something that really stood out for me in this book was the courage and determination that Kim Woodburn has shown through out her life and how she has dealt with more tragedy than most of us would experience in a lifetime but has managed to remain a positive, kind and genuinely likeable woman who you can’t help but have a huge amount of respect for. If you haven’t read Unbeatable by Kim Woodburn yet I highly recommend you do so ASAP as this is one gem of a book that has a harsh and brutally honest story to be told, and one that I believe truly deserves to be heard.
