The debut album from the four piece from Sheffield is impressive to say the least, it includes the surprise No.1 smash “I bet you look good on the dancefloor”, which I am pretty certain everyone will have heard at some time, even if they were unsure as to who it was playing on the radio. The Arctic Monkeys music is a clash between Indie/Grunge and some dance elements.
“Whatever People Say” begins with “The view from the afternoon”, a fast pace drum track, perfect for getting you all pumped up before hitting the town, moving on to “I bet you look good on the dancefloor” probably the monkeys most well known track, “Fake tales of san Francisco” follows on and features some of the best lyrics of the album, but just doesn’t seem to hit the top and falls somewhat short in the catchy department.
The album for me takes a bit of a dip here, with track 4 and 5 being pretty weak, but then stepping up to the brilliant “Still take you home” fast paced, great lyrics, a bit of a dark horse, moving along to “Riot Van” which paints a brilliant image in your mind – #we got a chase last night, from men with truncheons dressed in hats#. And again dipping down apart from “Mardy Bum” – a brilliantly written track and the albums finale “A certain romance” which is quite possibly the best track on the album.
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s what I’m Not is a very good debut album, but is quite samey in sections defiantly worth a listen, hopefully they’re next album will eclipse it, and iron out the problems with this one.
